COI-NEXT Project Leader Hiroaki Kitano Co-authors Article Featured on the Cover of Nature Sensors

Professor Hiroaki Kitano, OIST Professor and COI-NEXT Project Leader, collaborated with Milena Di Canio, Filippo Gregoretti and Vittorio Loreto on the concept of “societal listening.”

They propose using environmental sensing systems not only to measure change, but also to make environmental data understandable and meaningful to the public, encouraging collective action before problems become crises. Their project Ulysses’ Gates demonstrates this approach by transforming more than a century of Venice’s tidal and environmental data into sound, music and images.
