Why did you choose OIST?

Nationality: Vietnam
Unit: Quantum Systems Unit
Year: Interviewed 2nd year in PhD (2025)

What made you decide to come to OIST?

The opportunity to work with Prof. Thomas Busch, an expert in quantum thermodynamics and ultracold atoms - areas I’m passionate about. My interest in Japanese culture and the fact that OIST offers a unique, fully funded five‑year PhD program in Japan.

What set OIST apart from other universities?

A fully funded, five‑year PhD program with no departmental barriers - promoting interdisciplinary “science without boundaries.” A lab rotation system in the first year that allows students to explore different research units and find the best fit.

What are your best experiences at OIST?

Access to state‑of‑the‑art research facilities alongside strong support for student well‑being and mental health. An annual support to attend an international conference or summer school, which has been invaluable for networking and professional growth.

How was your internship experience at OIST before joining as PhD student?

I enjoyed both the research activities in the lab and the beauty of Okinawa. During my 6-month internship, I did try many new things, such as studying quantum computing and quantum batteries; snorkeling and diving at the beautiful Okinawa beaches, many outreach activities to connect with not only OISTers but also local Okinawa people.
