Student Housing Information (For Incoming Students)

Housing Information for New Students

1. Room Allocation

  • Basic room allocation
Single (bachelor) Shared room (Private bedroom)
Couple One-bedroom unit
Family
(3 or more members)
One- or Two-bedroom unit

* Room allocation is subject to availability. There may be exceptions to the standard room allocation.

  • Single Student (including Geographical Bachelor)

The Housing Management Section (HMS) will allocate "on-campus shared furnished rooms" for prospective students. Upon acceptance, students will have the chance to create a profile and utilize a roommate matching platform. In the event a suitable roommate is not found through the platform, OIST will pair the student with others based on basic information such as gender and allocate a bedroom accordingly. Typically, room assignments will be disclosed 3 to 4 weeks prior to the scheduled arrival date.

*If you require a special room allocation due to physical or mental challenges, please contact the Graduate School (gs-support@oist.jp). Depending on your situation, OIST may ask you to provide relevant medical reports or documentation, authenticated by licensed practitioners, to support your request. Following this, collaborative discussions will involve representatives from the OIST Health Center, Ganjuu Wellbeing Services, the Graduate School, and the Housing Management Section to determine the best means of support, including housing allocation.

  • Relocation with Family

If you are relocating with your family, you may be eligible for a private unit. However, room allocation will be subject to availability. If no suitable on-campus rooms are available, the off-campus option will be considered.
If you are relocating with your family, please contact the Housing Management Section. (Click HERE.)

Room allocation will usually be announced three to two weeks before your arrival date.

2. Roommate Matching Service (for shared rooms)

Similar to a bulletin board, the Housing Management Section will create a private channel to help you find a roommate. Only incoming students and current students seeking a roommate can join.

Your profile will be shared in this private channel, where members can view all profiles and search for potential roommates. You’ll also be able to communicate directly with other members on the platform.
