How to Get an International Driving Permit Based on a Japanese Driver's License

Where to go

Please visit one of the following without an appointment:

*1 An IDP will be issued on the same day if you go to Okinawa Prefectural Police Driver's License Center
*2 If you apply for an IDP through a Driving School, it will take approx. 3 weeks.

Reception hours

Mon-Fri (except holidays, Okinawa Memorial Day(23 June), and New Year's holiday)

Morning: Between 8:30 and 11:30

Afternoon: Between 13:00 and 16:45

Required documents (MUST BE ORIGINAL)

  • Japanese driver's license
  • Passport or official business trip certificate
  • A headshot photo*
    1. H4.5cm×W3.5cm
    2. The photo must be taken within the last 6 months
    3. Taken in full-face view directly facing the camera
    4. The photo should show a close-up of your face and the top of the shoulders
    5. No background
    RC-Photo-size

    *can be taken at the Driver's License Center on the day of submission

  • Fee: 2,250円 (Purchase Okinawa prefectural revenue stamps at window#6 or #7 at the License Center)

Procedure

  1. Visit either the Driver's License Center or a Driving School
  2. Fill out an application form for International Driving Permit at window#3
  3. Submit the application form along with the required documents at window#3
  4. Pay the fee by purchasing Okinawa prefectural revenue stamps at window#6 or window #7
  5. Receive your International Driving Permit at window#3

    *If you are applying through one of the Driving Schools, you need to go back to their office to pick it up
