Support

The Embodied Cognitive Science Unit welcomes philanthropic and foundation support for its research, scientific meetings, visiting researchers, and other activities that advance the unit’s work.

These resources provide greater flexibility to pursue new ideas, move promising work forward more quickly, bring researchers together, and create opportunities for scientific exchange.

Gifts are made to the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) and may be designated for the Embodied Cognitive Science Unit.

To discuss giving opportunities, foundation support, or documentation requirements, please contact OIST Advancement (donation@oist.jp). For questions about the unit’s research and priorities, please contact Professor Tom Froese (tom.froese@oist.jp).

To reach a specific member of the unit, please see the ECSU Members page.

Finding us on campus

ECSU is distributed across two buildings at OIST:

  • Main offices and dry labs — Lab Building 2, Level B. The main ECSU suite is B600 (offices, open collaboration space with whiteboard wall, and the ECSU library of 620+ books), and Tom's office nearby in B664. B600 is also where our Artificial Life and Engineering labs are based, for mechanical experiments, prototyping, and custom device development.
  • Human Behavior Lab — Central Building, Level B, Room B234. Our dedicated human-subjects research facility (opened 2024, converted from the former OIST Clinic). Houses three experimental rooms configured for EEG hyperscanning and individual experimental studies, an operator room, and participant facilities. The Central Building location allows convenient access for external study participants.

(An updated floor map covering both the Lab 2 spaces and the Human Behavior Lab is in preparation and will be posted here shortly.)
