SEED Program:Kagoshima Gyokuryu High School students visited OIST
Students from Kagoshima Prefectural Gyoku Ryuu High School visited OIST.
In the morning, they gave presentations on their research projects. Through feedback and question-and-answer sessions with OIST PhD students, they deepened their understanding of their research while developing their scientific communication skills.
This was followed by a career talk from Alexander Henry Hodges (OIST PhD student / Quantum Machines Unit), who spoke about what inspired him to pursue a career in science.
Through his talk, students learned about the journey of becoming a researcher and the different paths that can lead to a scientific career.
Alexander Henry Hodges also gave a science lecture titled “Is Light Particle or Wave?” In the lecture, students learned about the properties of light and how interference works, helping them understand how light behaves as a wave.
After the lecture, students took part in a hands-on activity using lasers and a two-slit grating to observe interference patterns and compare their predictions with their experimental results. They also repeated the experiment using a laser with an unknown wavelength and used the data they collected to calculate its wavelength.
