In Memory of Professor Susumu Tonegawa, Former OIST Board Member

Pioneering scientist who advanced immunology and neuroscience and helped shape OIST in its founding years leaves a profound and lasting legacy.

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) is deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Professor Susumu Tonegawa on July 11. Professor Tonegawa was the first Japanese scientist to receive the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, in 1987.

OIST Interim President, Dr. Daniel Zajfman commented, “Upon learning of the passing of Professor Susumu Tonegawa, a founding member of OIST's Board of Governors, the entire OIST community extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and former students. Professor Tonegawa's extraordinary scientific achievements, visionary leadership, and unwavering commitment to excellence were instrumental in shaping OIST during its formative years. As one of the world's foremost scientists, his insight and guidance helped establish the foundations upon which OIST has flourished. We honor Professor Tonegawa's profound contributions to humanity through his groundbreaking discoveries in immunology and neuroscience, and we will continue to be inspired by the curiosity, creativity, and intellectual rigor that defined his remarkable life.“

Professor Tonegawa served as a member of the OIST Board of Governors from November 1, 2011, to October 31, 2014, and made significant contributions to the development of OIST during its formative years.
