Mission
The nature of Okinawa is a rich, diverse, and beautiful landscape including rugged coastal cliffs, fertile red-soil plains, dense forests, peaceful mangroves, vibrant coral reefs, deep-sea hydrothermal vents, and the dynamic Kuroshio current.
The Marine and Terrestrial Sciences Section supports research across Okinawa’s connected land and sea environments. Operating across the Marine Science Station, Sea neXus, and OIST’s main campus, MTS provides technical expertise, fieldwork logistics, specialist facilities, environmental monitoring, data and informatics support, biological collections, and coordination with local stakeholders.
Our mission is to make environmental research at OIST more connected, efficient, and impactful, while strengthening OIST’s contribution to Okinawa’s environment, communities, and broader research network.
