Marine Science

Mission

The nature of marine environment around Okinawa is so rich and diverse, including beautiful coral reefs, peaceful mangrove ecosystems, deep-sea hydrothermal vents, and the dynamic Kuroshio. These surrounding environments also deliver great opportunities for marine science research. By providing our best supports, the Marine Science Section (MSS) contributes to all aspects of marine science research activities.

Field Work and Diving Safety

Our field work experts provides support to survey in Okinawa's unique marine environments.

We also offer the guidance on safety research diving in accordance with OIST diving regulation.

A new study reveals that anemonefish display aggressive behavior against other fish with vertical white bar patterns to avoid them from inhabiting their territory—the sea anemone.

Research & Experimental Design Consultation

The OMSS team consists of experienced researchers in both fieldwork and laboratory settings.

With a deep understanding of marine ecosystems and advanced research techniques, the team provides essential support to a wide range of projects.

Whether conducting field research or managing cutting-edge experiments in the lab, the OMSS team works closely with researchers to ensure the success of their studies.
