SEED Program:DoDEA Pacific students visited OIST

On 24th February 2026, 24 students visited OIST as part of the DoDEA Pacific Regional Research Symposium.

In the morning, students attended a career talk by Kensei Kikuchi (OIST PhD student / Evolutionary Genomics Unit).
He shared his academic journey and why he decided to study at OIST, giving students insight into research at OIST and different choices for their future paths.
 
This was followed by a science lecture and hands-on activity on the theme of ecology.
Through classifying different termite species, students learned the basics of ecology and deepened their scientific thinking through careful observation.
 
In the afternoon, students joined a discussion session with OIST PhD students and Scientists had the opportunity to interact and exchange ideas.
During the campus tour, they visited OIST’s research facilities and experienced its international and interdisciplinary research environment.
 
This was followed by a career talk by Alexander Henry Hodges (OIST PhD student / Quantum Machines Unit), along with a science lecture and hands-on activity on the theme of “Quantum Entanglement / Double Slit Experiment.” Through this session, students explored the basics of quantum physics and gained a deeper understanding of OIST’s interdisciplinary research.
