Connecting Science & Society

Your gift empowers students to lead initiatives that strengthen communities, foster innovation, and connect science with society beyond the laboratory.

Together, these programs help ensure that the impact of OIST extends well beyond its laboratories - into schools, neighborhoods, and communities across Okinawa and beyond.

Student Initiative Program

The Student Initiative Program empowers OIST students to turn ideas into action. Through cultural exchange, entrepreneurship, outreach, publications, and student-led activities, participants develop leadership skills while building stronger connections between OIST and the Okinawan community.

Your support helps fund:

  • Community outreach and cultural exchange
  • Student entrepreneurship and leadership training
  • The student-run Kuroshio magazine
  • Student clubs and recreational activities
  • Sustainable transportation initiatives, including bicycle rentals

Recreation Services BeActive Program

The BeActive Program brings together OIST members and the wider Okinawan community through recreation, wellness, and shared experiences. By encouraging healthy lifestyles and meaningful connections, the program helps build a stronger, more inclusive community.

Because BeActive is not supported by government funding, philanthropic support is essential to sustaining and expanding these opportunities.
