OIST x WPI-AIMEC Joint Workshop Explores How Marine Ecosystems Are Changing
The 2025 OIST x WPI-AIMEC Joint Workshop: “Changing Marine Ecosystems: Biogeography of Habitat Shifts and Adaptation to Oceanographic Variability” brought together over a hundred marine scientists for two days of collaboration and discovery at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) on November 20–21, 2025.
With 105 participants from institutions across Japan and abroad—including Tohoku University, JAMSTEC, the University of Hawai‘i, the University of the Ryukyus, Nagasaki University, and the Toyota Konpon Institute—the workshop served as a critical gathering point for researchers investigating how climate-driven environmental forces are reshaping marine life and habitats.
This year’s workshop stood out for placing early-career researchers at the center of the program. Most presentations were delivered by postdoctoral fellows and graduate students, creating a supportive environment for fresh perspectives and fostering scientific dialogue across disciplines.
The scientific program spanned a broad range of themes. Sessions explored coastal ecosystem dynamics, ocean environment monitoring, satellite and imaging technologies, and collaborative approaches to marine research. Presentations highlighted work on coral reef microbial communities, genomic discoveries in deep-sea fungi, daily eDNA monitoring of reef fish diversity, modeling harmful algal blooms, and assessing microplastics in coastal waters.
These sessions highlighted not only scientific complexity but also the need for integrative approaches combining ocean physics, ecology, and data science.
Beyond presentations, the workshop prioritized discussion, networking, and idea generation. Participants engaged in discussions aimed at identifying future research collaborations and pursuing joint funding.
A highlight of the event was the “bold idea” brainstorming session on the second day, where participants generated innovative concepts related to sample collection techniques, strategies for addressing marine plastic pollution, and new approaches to understanding ecosystem change. These discussions emphasized the workshop’s commitment to generating new solutions for global ocean challenges.
Participants also joined lab tours and a networking dinner, a welcome chance to strengthen professional ties and build new research partnerships.
The workshop reaffirmed the longstanding collaboration between OIST and Tohoku University, a partnership ongoing since 2021 and now bolstered through WPI-AIMEC and JAMSTEC’s involvement. The event emphasized the importance of joint efforts in confronting marine ecosystem challenges that transcend disciplinary and geographic boundaries. As climate change continues to drive shifts in oceanographic conditions, gatherings like this play an essential role in uniting researchers who are advancing the understanding of marine ecosystem adaptation and resilience.
