From the Board of Governors: Dr. Karin Markides

Dr. Karin Markides takes up President Emerita and Executive Advisor

Following a communication from OIST President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Karin Markides, the Board of Governors of the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University School Corporation (OIST SC) today advised the Cabinet Office that Dr. Markides will take up a new position as OIST Executive Advisor from April 2026.

This externally focused role will secure Dr. Markides's continuing active service in support of OIST's high-level stakeholder and international relations until May 2028. The role of President Emerita is lifelong, recognizing Dr. Markides's foundational contribution to OIST's development.

The OIST SC Board of Governors noted that under Dr. Karin Markides's leadership, the institution has prioritised operating efficiency while sustaining international scientific and educational excellence, extending its impactful outreach mission, diversifying income, building philanthropic networks, strengthening technology-driven entrepreneurship in support of the self-sustaining development of Okinawa, and stimulating ambitious interdisciplinary collaboration. Dr. Markides has also guided OIST through key stages of a CAO external panel review of the University, which will publish its recommendations later this year.

The OIST SC Board of Governors will shortly appoint and announce an Interim President and CEO. It will also commission and oversee a global search process to recruit Dr. Markides's permanent successor.
