Experimental Researcher in Diamond Quantum Science

The position

Position summary:

The Quantum Machines Unit seeks to develop macroscopic quantum systems using magnetic levitation. One of the fundamental tenants of quantum mechanics is that everything in nature obeys the laws of quantum mechanics. Does this really hold for macroscopic objects, objects where gravitational forces become significant? Researchers have put forward proposals for “desktop-sized” experiments to probe the influence between gravity and the quantum world but one of the fundamental components in this is the engineering of non-classical motional states of macroscopic systems. In the Quantum Machines Unit we have developed unique magnetic levitation and cooling techniques which can levitate large objects – including diamonds containing Nitrogen Vacancy defects, in high vacuum. We are seeking talented individuals who have experimental expertise in NV defects in diamond, and who can assist us in moving forward to engineer non-classical states of motion of our maglev systems.  On the way we envisage such setups can be useful for extreme sensing of gravity and inertial forces.

Position:

We are seeking talented researchers to perform experimental research in the field of hybrid systems – coupling spin to mechanics, light to mechanics or light to spins. This research is focused on the generation of macroscopic Schrodinger cats using trapped objects – either at room temperature or at cryogenic temperatures. We seek an experimentalist with engineering/experimental expertise in experiments manipulating spins in solids and in particular, defects in diamond including NV defects.

About OIST

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University was established in 2011 to contribute to the development of science and technology worldwide and to serve as a hub of innovation in Okinawa. OIST is a dynamic new graduate university of science and technology in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan which offers a 5-year PhD program and brings together outstanding researchers from across the country and across disciplines to conduct cutting-edge scientific research.

The university is located on 85 hectares of protected forestland overlooking a beautiful shoreline and coral reefs. The campus is striking architecturally, and the facilities are outstanding. To facilitate multidisciplinary research, there are no academic departments. Outstanding resources and equipment are provided and managed to encourage easy access and collaboration.

English is the official language of the University, and the university research community is fully international, with more than 50 countries represented. OIST is rapidly gaining recognition in the worldwide academic community as a model for excellence in education and research, and our unwavering commitment to scientific and technological innovation is dedicated to generating progress that will fuel Okinawa's economic growth.
