Having become Japan’s first and only organizational member of the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) in 2025, OIST recently conducted an AAUS Scientific Diver Training Course using OIST Sea neXus as the teaching space. Seven participants from OIST joined the course — which ran from January to April — advancing their skills and achieving an internationally recognized scientific diving certification. The OIST Sea neXus meeting and collaboration space functioned as a hub for the intensive theory aspects of the course, providing space for training that ranged from first aid and CPR to dive planning and preparation.
“Not only is the OIST Sea neXus excellent for research needs, but it also provides the diving and boating program a modern, high-tech location for intensive training,” says Hanna Reed, OIST Diving and Boating Safety Officer, who led the course. The collaborative space of the OIST Sea neXus will function as a vital teaching location for future OIST AAUS dive trainings, allowing OIST to further develop its world-leading dive program and facilitate outstanding marine science research.
