OCQT members participate in major research and development projects supported by national funding programs and conducted in collaboration with universities, research institutions, and industry partners across Japan.
These projects span quantum computing, communication, simulation, artificial intelligence, and human resource development, bringing together complementary expertise to advance quantum science and technology.
COI-NEXT(Program on Open Innovation Platforms for Industry-academia Co-creation)
The SQAI project is developing a quantum AI platform through the integration of these quantum technologies: Quantum Machine Learning, Quantum Simulation, Quantum Embedding, Quantum Optimization, and Quantum High Performance Computing. OIST participates in three of these research topics, and together with the project team members we develop new quantum technologies pushing the boundary of our quantum world.

This project aims to develop ion trap devices that facilitate building large-scale quantum systems beyond the limitations posed by conventional approaches. Assistant Professor Hiroki Takahashi from OIST leads this project as the program director. The new approach is based on a novel idea of photonically interconnecting multiple ion traps.

This research theme led by Prof. T. Yamamoto from Osaka University aims to develop elemental technologies for networking quantum computers with various physical systems such as photons, atoms, and semiconductors.
Dr. Yuimaru Kubo from OIST conducts a project within this framework on Superconductor network-type technology as the Principle Investigator.
In this research, a quantum transducer that bidirectionally converts microwave and optical photons will be developed using impurity spins in diamond crystals.

This research theme led by Prof. M. Koashi from the University of Tokyo is to investigate and develop theory and software technologies for large-scale quantum computation. Prof. Kae Nemoto from OIST leads a project on computer architecture and Middleware for fault-tolerant quantum computation.

This research theme led by Prof. Shota Nagayama from Keio University focuses on a key technology for distributed large-scale quantum computers, integrating hardware and software to demonstrate the principles and technologies of communication architectures and protocols. The research team co-led with Prof. Kae Nemoto and Associate Prof. David Elkouss conducts the research project on edge architecture for scalable quantum communication networks.

Research and Development Topic D-2: Development and Implementation of Educational Programs (under the Innovation Creation Platform) focuses on developing and providing educational programs targeting highly skilled personnel capable of training and guiding the next generation of industrial talent. The goal is to cultivate and secure a broad range of talent from both industry and academia, including young professionals (students, researchers, engineers, and entrepreneurs). This initiative aims to foster quantum talent through industry-academia collaboration, ensuring the development of skilled professionals in quantum-related fields.

Human Resource Development-Oriented Collaborative Development Platform for Non-Hardware Quantum Computing

This project* aims to develop human resources in industry through collaboration between the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) and the National Institute of Informatics (NII). The target field is non-hardware technologies, which are essential for the industrialization of quantum computing and are expected to play an important role in future industrial value creation. The program aims to foster talent capable of leading the global market.
*This project is part of the “Post-5G Information and Communication Systems Infrastructure Enhancement Research and Development Project.”
The human resource development platform consists of two stages:
• Collaborative development through human-resource-development-oriented prototyping (core program) *
• Reskilling for addressing quantum computing challenges (preparatory stage for broader training)
*In the future, the program is expected to continue as a collaborative development consortium, and to provide introductory-level human resource development for companies participating in the consortium.
