Previously, Dr. Markides served as President and CEO of Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden and later as President of the American University of Armenia (which is affiliated with the University of California system). Additionally, she has had a distinguished career as a scientist and professor in the U.S. and Europe.

“I am excited to join this impressive and young institution,” says Dr. Markides. “OIST attracts the best and brightest faculty and students — and I relish the opportunity to work with them to support OIST in realizing its aspirations as a world-class pioneering graduate university.”

At OIST, Dr. Markides will work to ensure the institution is connected and relevant to society: “I am especially interested in the role of universities for a sustainable future in communities and business.” She continues, “As part of that, OIST has an important role in developing the next generation of knowledge providers and leaders.”

In addition, Dr. Markides is enthusiastic to see OIST contribute to the sustainable development of Okinawa. “From my past experience, I believe the keys to successful innovation ecosystems are collaborating and building trust, followed by partnership collaboration with other universities; industries; the public sector, including central and local governments; and the community,” says Dr. Markides. “Together, we will make meaningful contributions to Okinawa, to Japan, and to science in the world!”
