Packing of DNA that contains cryptic TSSs in wildtype and mutant plants

In wildtype plants (upper), the DNA (blue strands) is methylated (red diamonds) and tightly packed, so the cryptic TSSs are inaccessible. In epigenetic mutants (lower), the DNA is less methylated and becomes accessible, allowing the cryptic TSSs to be activated.
