Competing electronic states of CeTe₃

The arrangement of electrons is shown in the material CeTe3 at atomic resolution.

At near absolute zero, the electronic pattern of CeTe3 has a striped appearance. When a small magnetic field is applied, the electrons rearrange to form a checkerboard electronic pattern. These competing patterns were observed using scanning tunneling microscopy. Yellow represents high electron density while purple represents low.
