Description

Trapped-ion systems are among the leading platforms for quantum information processing, owing to their high-fidelity operations and long coherence times. Further scaling these systems for large-scale quantum computing and quantum networks requires efficient quantum interfaces between trapped ions and photons. Cavity quantum electrodynamics (cavity QED) provides a powerful tool to enhance ion–photon interactions and improve photon generation and collection.

This report reviews the development of cavity-enhanced ion–photon interfaces, from early cavity QED experiments with trapped ions using macroscopic optical cavities to recent fiber microcavity-based approaches. We present our high-stability fiber microcavity integrated ion-trap system and demonstrate its capabilities for enhanced ion–photon interactions, rapid single-photon generation, and ion motional characterization, providing a foundation for scalable trapped-ion quantum computing and quantum networks.
