OIST Contribution to Okinawa Database

Researchers at Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) developed a method to measure coral biodiversity using environmental DNA collected from seawater samples. The technique was validated against direct observations by scientific divers and could enable large-scale coral reef surveys.

OIST, Ryuseki, the University of the Ryukyus, and JANUS signed an agreement to advance the Okinawa Blue Carbon Project, promoting research, environmental conservation, and industry-academia collaboration to support carbon neutrality and ecosystem restoration.

OIST is developing Plastitective, a machine learning-based platform that rapidly and accurately detects microplastics, helping improve seafood safety and environmental monitoring through standardized analysis.

OIST is developing an Edge AI-based monitoring system that detects invasive frog species in real time, helping conservation teams protect biodiversity through faster and more efficient environmental monitoring.

OIST and Nikko signed a licensing agreement to commercialize an innovative microbial wastewater treatment technology aimed at reducing the environmental impact of livestock farming and supporting sustainable agricultural development.

OIST and Onna Village developed a functional rice variety that promotes health benefits and regional agricultural innovation.
