About us

OIST LGBTQ+ Allies is a self-organized group of students, researchers, staff and OIST community members that aims to give support to the LGBTQIA+ community at OIST and bring light to current LGBTQIA+ issues in Japan and worldwide.

We aim to be a safe space for queer individuals at OIST. Personal information shared with the group is strictly confidential unless otherwise requested.

Current activities

Regular meetings

  • Coffee meeting: formal meeting to discuss our activities and decide the next steps of the group. Held once a month.
  • Monthly fun event: Anything from karaoke, a hike or quiet craft night.

14th June: Beach Day with Out in Oki

in Kadena Marina

Out in Oki invited us to join their beach day in Kadena Marina. There will be a BBQ (bring your own food) and a bounce house!

 

17th June: Movie Night: Pride (2014)

Join us to watch the movie Pride (2014)! In this historical comedy, a group of lesbian and gay activists raise money for people affected by the miners strike in the UK in the 80s.

 

21st June: Pride Brunch: Connecting OIST and Okinawa’s LGBTQ+ Community

Join us for a brunch with some local queer families and learn more about the life of rainbow families in Okinawa. 

 

24th June: Talk: The body doesn't come with instructions

In this talk we present the concept of bioessentialism and how it ignores the reality of sexual minorities.

 

4th July: Pride Extravaganza

Join us for our extravagant closing party! Dress up in drag (or any form gender exploration), participate in our categories and win great prizes. Details will be announced later.
