Associate Dean for Faculty Recruiting and Evaluation

The position

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (www.oist.jp) is seeking to recruit an Associate Dean of Faculty Recruiting and Evaluation, working in the Faculty Affairs Office. OIST is a new and innovative graduate university of science and technology in Okinawa, Japan. The working language is English, and the university community is fully international with more than 50 countries represented. The absence of academic departments facilitates multidisciplinary research across and within faculty research units. Outstanding resources and equipment are provided and managed to encourage easy access and collaboration. OIST is rapidly gaining recognition in the worldwide academic community as a model for excellence in education and research.
 
The Faculty Affairs Office (FAO), led by the Dean of Faculty Affairs (currently, Prof. Evan Economo), oversees essential functions supporting the success of  91 faculty and ~500 researchers.  Central to these activities are the recruitment of world-class new faculty, and the evaluation of existing faculty and their research groups in a rigorous and fair manner.  Other responsibilities of the FAO include space allocation, the library, professional and pedagogical development, DEI, misconduct processes, and personnel management.


Position Summary:
The Associate Dean (AD) will be based in the Faculty Affairs Office working with the Dean of Faculty Affairs (DFA).  The AD will lead a team (currently four staff members) that administers faculty searches and faculty evaluation (tenure, promotion, and research review) processes for 91 faculty and research units at OIST.  The AD will work on the operational level, supporting committees of OIST faculty and external review panels in recruitment and review processes.  In addition, the AD will work with the DFA and other University leaders to develop effective policies and procedures.  The chosen individual should understand academic norms and processes, be flexible enough to adapt to unfamiliar systems, be able to communicate effectively with faculty, reviewers, and other stakeholders, and be committed to the highest standards of confidentiality.

Responsibilities
  1. Work with the Dean of Faculty Affairs to execute high-quality faculty recruitment and faculty evaluations (tenure, promotion, and research unit reviews).
  2. Work with the Dean, senior university leadership, and faculty to develop effective and transparent policies, rules, and procedures for recruitments and evaluations.
  3. Manage a team of experienced staff in the recruiting and evaluations section.
  4. Support the administration and operation of faculty search committees.
  5. Support the administration and operation of faculty tenure and promotion committees.
  6. Organize periodic research unit reviews by distinguished external experts.
  7. Communicate and collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  8. Plan and execute budgets for the section.
  9. Perform other duties assigned by the Dean of Faculty Affairs.
Qualifications

(Required)

  1. PhD or comparable advanced degree in an area of science and technology
  2. Excellent written and conversational communication skills (English)
  3. Familiarity with academic faculty recruitments
  4. Familiarity with academic tenure and promotion reviews
  5. Understanding of equal employment opportunity (EEO) practices

  7. Possess the highest standards of professionalism and respect for policies, rules, and procedures

(Preferred)

  1. Direct experience with faculty affairs administration, including recruitment and/or evaluations.
  2. Experience as a faculty member or principal investigator at an academic institution.
  3. Strategic thinker able to design effective policy and communicate to stakeholders.
  4. Ability to contribute to the broader faculty affairs portfolio.
Compensation and Benefits

In accordance with the OIST Employee Compensation Regulations

Annual salary: 10 million yen ~ 14 million yen (Up to 17 million Yen could be considered for very experienced candidates.)
