OIST and the Onna Village Fisheries Cooperative successfully decoded the entire genome of sea grapes, a popular Okinawan seaweed that is unusual because its entire body consists of a single giant cell containing many nuclei. The study revealed key genetic features of sea grapes and provided new insights into how this unique organism grows and develops. The genome information is expected to support future improvements in sea grape cultivation and contribute to research on marine environmental challenges.
