Researchers from OIST and NTT Communications have demonstrated a new way to study coral reefs using underwater drones and environmental DNA collected from seawater. The team successfully identified corals living in deeper reef habitats without relying on direct observations by divers. This approach could make it easier to monitor coral reef ecosystems on a larger scale and expand research into some of the ocean’s least explored environments.
