SEED Program:Ishikawa Prefectural Nanao high school students visited OIST.
Students from Nanao High School in Ishikawa Prefecture visited OIST as part of their Super Science High School (SSH) program.
They gave poster presentations in English on their research projects and received feedback from OIST PhD students.
Through the question-and-answer sessions, they deepened their understanding of their research while experiencing scientific communication in English.
This was followed by a career talk from Yulia Shcherbakova (OIST PhD student / Microbial and Ecosystem Ecology Unit), who spoke about what inspired her to pursue a career in science and shared her experience at OIST.
In the afternoon, Yijin Lee (OIST PhD student / Marine Climate Change Unit) gave a career talk, followed by a science lecture titled “DNA, The Invisible ID.” The lecture introduced how DNA functions as the invisible identifier of living organisms and how it is applied in a wide range of fields, including medicine and environmental DNA (eDNA).
Students then took part in a hands-on activity, where they experienced the full experimental process, from making the gel and allowing it to solidify to running electrophoresis and examining the results. Through observation and discussion, they deepened their understanding of the techniques used to visualize DNA while learning the fundamentals of molecular biology.
Students also joined a campus tour, where they visited OIST’s research facilities and experienced its cutting-edge research environment.
