SEED Program: Seishin Gakuen Gigh School visted OIST
On the first day, Seishin Gakuen High School students had career talk by Aurellia Ramara Winaya, (OIST PhD Student, Cell Division Dynamics Unit), who shared her motivation for pursuing science at OIST and introduced her current research on cancer cells. Students also visited Cell Division Dynamics Unit and had the opportunity to observe live cancer cells under a microscope, gaining firsthand experience in experimental biology.
Lakshmipriya Swaminathan (Junior Research Fellow, Neural Rhythms in Movement Unit), gave an engaging lecture on motion capture technology used to precisely track the movements of freely moving mice, and how this connects to neural activity.
Students also joined a campus tour and challenged themselves to present their own research projects in English to OIST PhD students, receiving valuable feedback.
On the second day, Dr.Christophe Pin,(Staff Scientist, Light-Matter Interactions for Quantum Technologies Unit), gave a lecture on quantum optics and its applications. Dr.Marco Edoardo Rosti (Associate Professor, Complex Fluids and Flows Unit), introduced the fundamentals of fluid dynamics and its bio-related applications, encouraging students to think about how fluid behavior impacts natural systems.
Arina Mazurova, (OIST PhD student, Evolutionary and Synthetic Biology), gave a career talk and lab tour. During her session, she demonstrated DNA separation using gel electrophoresis, providing students with a closer look at molecular biology in practice.
Through lectures, lab visits, and interactive sessions with OIST researchers and PhD students, participants gained valuable insights into cutting-edge science and academic career paths.
