How did you hear about OIST?
While I was an undergraduate student in Vietnam, I looked for opportunities to do research internships abroad. A senior student introduced me to the OIST internship program – one of the few programs that provides 100% financial support for international students. I applied once but wasn’t accepted the first time. On my second attempt, in the very next round, I was selected and had the chance to intern at OIST.
What make you decide to come to OIST?
My decision to pursue a PhD at OIST mainly came from the positive experiences I had during my internship. My professor gave me dedicated guidance, even though I was only an intern and not yet an official member of the research group. I also had direct access to state-of-the-art research equipment – something I rarely had the chance to experience in Vietnam.
What set OIST apart from other universities?
OIST is geographically close to Vietnam and offers an international research environment that clearly stands out from most other universities in Japan. It provides generous financial support for doctoral students, allowing us to fully concentrate on research.
What are your best experiences at OIST?
I don’t have many “memorable” experiences in the usual student life sense, but what I remember most are the moments in the lab when I obtained unexpected results – it was a very exciting feeling. And during times when my experiments failed, I would go to the beach (just a 10-minute walk from campus) to relieve stress.
