Life after OIST: Postdoctoral Researcher with Dodge Family Fellowship, Center for Quantum Research and Technology, the University of Oklahoma, USA

How did you hear about OIST?

When I was a second-year undergraduate at HCM University of Education, my supervisors, Assoc. Prof. Vinh Pham and Dr. Tomotake Yamakoshi shared their experience at a cutting-edge research institute in Japan, especially Dr. Yamakoshi had during his employment interview. That was the time I heard about OIST and since then I drawn to the idea of pursuing such a unique place - an institute dedicated to world-class science, located on a beautiful tropical island with breathtaking beaches. Since that time, OIST had been my academic goal during my undergraduate studies under the supervision and encouragement of Assoc. Prof. Vinh Pham and Dr. Tomotake Yamakoshi.

What make you decide to come to OIST?

When I came to OIST for the admission workshop in February 2019, the interdisciplinary academic environment with mentors who are not only top-tier scientists, but who also genuinely care about teaching and mentoring the next generation of scientists fully persuaded me that OIST was the appropriate place for me to pursue my PhD. Additionally, the competitive stipend, travel support, and access to cutting-edge labs were additional critical factors that made me decide to come to OIST.

What set OIST apart from other universities?

From my perspective, OIST is distinguished from other universities due to its truly interdisciplinary academic and research-focused environment, where there are no boundaries between various research disciplines. With high-class facilities, full financial support for PhD students, and a strong emphasis on fundamental science, OIST offers a distinctive environment for the exploration of innovative and fruitful ideas in science. Last but not least, its location in Okinawa also provides a peaceful, inspiring atmosphere that fosters both scientific research and personal well-being.

What are your best experiences at OIST?

Beyond the lab, my most memorable experience at OIST has been the five years I spent living in Okinawa. This unique experience has allowed me to develop as a scientist and as a person by engaging in conversations with friendly locals, enjoying local cuisine, and taking a refreshing swim in the ocean after a long day of writing codes and reading papers.
