Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University, and Matsumoto Dental University announced that the three universities’ research groups have discovered a specific gene that prevents osteoporosis from progressing, in experiments using mice. Finding out a method to boost the activity of the CNOT3 gene may help develop new drugs. The study will be published online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, after the 4th of February.Read More

During a budget deal Friday with Finance Minister Taro Aso, Ichita Yamamoto, minister in charge of Okinawa issues, agreed upon the allocation of 346 billion yen in the fiscal 2014 budget to promote the local economy in Okinawa. On the back of sales tax increase starting in April, the government increased the budget by 5.2 billion. The budget includes 33 billion yen, up 3 billion from the initial request, earmarked for the construction of a second runway at Naha Airport each year, which will be separately allocated from the unrestricted lump-sum subsidy also beyond 2015.Read More
TV Asahi reported that Governor Nakaima went out of the hospital in Tokyo, where he is hospitalized to undergo some tests, to visit the prime minister’s office with the aim to call for the expansion of OIST from the current 300 faculty level to 500.
After the meeting with Prime Minister Abe, Governor Nakaima told reporters at a press conference that Abe, who had already visited OIST, implied that he would meet the requests from Okinawa Prefectural Government.

Yasutoshi Nishimura, Senior Vice-Minister of CAO [who visited OIST on Oct 7th] met with the representatives of the Okinawan business community and exchanged opinions. The members of the business community made requests to the government including items such as ensuring the budget of OIST and its expansion, constructing the second runway of Naha Airport and providing additional tax incentives for the promotion of investments in small and medium-sized enterprises.Read More
