Visual aids help close the ADHD-neurotypical gap in story retelling error rate

A graph shows that visual aids reduce the error rate to a greater extent in children with ADHD than in neurotypical children, for both fluency errors and linguistic inaccuracies.

During retellings of two Aesop fables, the rate at which children with ADHD (blue) commit errors in fluency and linguistic accuracy is generally higher than that of their neurotypical peers (orange). Re-presenting the comic panels shown during the initial storytelling as visual aids helps children with ADHD more. Fluency errors cover self-interruptions, pauses, repetitions, and fillers; linguistic inaccuracy covers referencing errors (e.g., using the wrong pronouns), cohesion errors (e.g., using a wrong connecting word like “and” instead of “because”), grammatic and semantic errors (wrong tenses or word order, or the wrong use of a word), and phonological errors (e.g., mispronunciations).
