Experimental Researcher in Levitated Macroscopic Quantum Systems
Position summary:
The Quantum Machines Unit seeks to develop macroscopic quantum systems using magnetic levitation. One of the fundamental tenants of quantum mechanics is that everything in nature obeys the laws of quantum mechanics. Does this really hold for macroscopic objects, objects where gravitational forces become significant? Researchers have put forward proposals for “desktop-sized” experiments to probe the influence between gravity and the quantum world but one of the fundamental components in this is the engineering of non-classical motional states of macroscopic systems. In the Quantum Machines Unit we have developed unique magnetic levitation and cooling techniques which can levitate large objects in high vacuum and cool their motion. We are seeking talented individuals who can assist us in moving forward to engineer non-classical states of motion of our maglev systems. On the way we envisage such setups can be useful for extreme sensing of gravity and inertial forces.
Position:
We are seeking talented researchers to perform experimental research in the field of hybrid systems – coupling spin to mechanics, light to mechanics or light to spins. This research is focused on the generation of macroscopic Schrodinger cats using trapped objects – either at room temperature or at cryogenic temperatures. We seek experimentalists with engineering/experimental expertise in any of the following: spins in solids e.g. NV defect, cryogenics, optics, photonics, microwave, vibration isolation etc. Prior experience in levitation eg. optical trapping, Paul trapping would be a bonus.
