What we do

Everyone at OIST shares the responsibility of creating a healthy and inclusive environment. This includes our systems and policies to our everyday interactions with people. The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) team supports the OIST community by serving as a capacity builder, as a coach, and as a connector across the university to create a fair, supportive and welcoming culture.

Capacity Builder

  • We help people learn how to integrate inclusive excellence into their work through learning and development, training, and workshops.
  • We develop institutional systems and infrastructure to promote inclusion, access and fairness.
  • We collaborate with external organizations to promote efforts addressing systemic equity challenges facing Japanese universities and research institutions.
  • We partner with Okinawan colleagues and local community members to deepen institutional investment in Okinawa.

Coach

  • We support groups across the university to develop goals and plans for diversity, equity and inclusion relevant to their work.
  • We coach those groups to develop the tools necessary to achieve their goals for a more fair and inclusive university climate.
  • We partner with others to develop sustainable solutions to group culture and engagement challenges.
  • We consult multiple perspectives and data to inform, measure, and share our efforts.

Connector

  • We facilitate opportunities for OISTers to build relationships across lines of difference.
  • We break down silos and foster connections between groups pursuing common goals for equity.
  • We connect grassroots efforts to systemic efforts for change.
  • We support network building among historically marginalized groups to build a collective.
