Science Outreach Program Developer

The position

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST; see www.oist.jp) is a dynamic new graduate university of science and technology in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. The university is located on 85 hectares of protected forestland overlooking beautiful shoreline and coral reefs. The campus is striking architecturally, and the facilities are outstanding (OIST campus video tour). There are no academic departments, which facilitates multidisciplinary research. Outstanding resources and equipment are provided and managed to encourage easy access and collaboration. English is the official language of the University, and the university research community is fully international, with more than 50 countries represented. Position summary:
This position helps the Admissions and Outreach Section (AOS) in the Graduate School of the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) plan, organize, and run educational outreach activities for middle and high school students interested in pursuing STEM careers. This position also creates teaching and program content for the OIST STEM Experience, Exploration, and Discovery Program (SEED), targeting Super Science High (SSH) school students.

Responsibilities
  1. Support the planning and development of on- and off-campus AOS science education outreach activities and events
  2. Creating the science hands-on activity content for the SEED Program with the Science Education Outreach Team Leader
  3. Provide teaching support and training for PhD students interested in the SEED Program
  4. Communicate with OIST students or researchers to organize hands-on activities or lectures
  5. Support other science education outreach events and workshops organized by AOS
Qualifications

(Required)

  1. At least 2 years of teaching or classroom management experience in secondary or post-secondary science, in school or in outreach programs, or equivalent
  2. Experience in designing science programs or workshops
  3. Excellent communication skills, including science communication
  4. Background in science research experience
  5. Experience in working in a team with diverse backgrounds and perspectives
