Students from Tokyo Metropolitan Tachikawa High School visited OIST as part of their Super Science High School (SSH) study trip.

This was followed by a career talk from Malgorzata Hall (Electron Microscopy Specialist, Scientific Imaging Section), who spoke about what inspired her to pursue a career in science.
Through her talk, students learned about the journey of becoming a researcher and the different paths that can lead to a scientific career.

Malgorzata Hall also gave a scientific lecture titled “Nano Beauty.” The lecture introduced the basic principles of electron microscopy and how beams of electrons are used to visualize structures at the nanometer scale.
Students also learned about sample preparation, including biological specimens, and how imaging conditions can be adjusted to address different research questions.
The session highlighted the important role of electron microscopy in modern scientific research.

Students then took part in a hands-on activity, where they explored the concepts introduced in the lecture through practical experience.
The activity gave them an opportunity to deepen their understanding of scientific observation and the process of scientific inquiry through electron microscopy.

At the end of the program, students joined a campus tour, where they visited OIST’s research facilities and experienced its international and interdisciplinary research environment.
