The Okinawa Industry Promotion Public Corporation (President: Yasutoshi Sueyoshi) and the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST) (President: Peter Gruss) have today, June 1st, 2022, signed an agreement to collaborate on the promotion of science and technology industries in Okinawa Prefecture.

The Okinawa Industry Promotion Public Corporation (President: Yasutoshi Sueyoshi) and the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST) (President: Peter Gruss) have today, June 1st, 2022, signed an agreement to collaborate on the promotion of science and technology industries in Okinawa Prefecture. Based on this agreement, the Corporation and OIST will establish a cooperative framework to scout for startups and support their commercialization. 

By connecting OIST-born startups to the business support of the Corporation, the program aims to leverage OIST’s research results and other resources in the local community. Local companies will be matched with OIST researchers, enabling the companies to utilize OIST’s advanced technology, research environment, and overseas network to promote local and overseas expansion in the fields of science and technology. At the same time, the two parties will work together to enhance their respective networks so the measures implemented in Okinawa Prefecture will be more effective.

Expected effects of enhanced collaboration 

The following results are expected through the establishment of this industry-academia collaboration: 

  • Creation of startups utilizing OIST research findings 
  • Increased technological capabilities through matching researchers with companies in Okinawa 
  • Accelerated commercialization of OIST-born startups in Okinawa
