Atolls are ring-shaped islands that form in the tropics and subtropics from the buildup of coral reefs atop an underwater landmass. The shape of the island usually forms a lagoon. The lagoons are often connected to the outside ocean by passes but Taiaro Atoll, located in French Polynesia, is unique. Its lagoon is fully enclosed. With a temperature of around 0.5-1.0°C warmer than the surrounding ocean, this lagoon provides scientists with a natural laboratory to answer questions about climate change and evolution. 脊索動物（ヒトを含む）の背側神経系を作りだす遺伝子はイトマキヒトデ（水腔動物の中の棘皮動物）の繊毛帯を作り出すように働いている。つまり、この二つの領域は相同であることが分かる。

22個のクラスターのそれぞれが、（A,B）原腸胚と（C,D,E）幼生のどの部分を構成する細胞を含むのかを、発生関連遺伝子の発現パターンから決めることができる。例えば８のクラスターは頂板を、９のクラスターは体腔中胚葉を特徴づける。

同時観察調査のイメージ。海中でのダイバーによる直接目視観察と船上での表面海水からの環境DNAの採集を同時に行い、その結果を比較した。
