Two photographs, left one showing a shallow riverbed flanked by buildings, the other a closeup of long, slender fish among tan stones.

The Urachi river on Kume Island (left). The area of the riverbed shown in this photograph contains the entire population of Luciogobius ryukyuensis (right) on Kume Island, which is genetically distinct from all other populations of the fish.
