Promotion of Gendered Innovation in Japan: Historical Context, Emerging Funding Trends, and OIST–JAIST Collaboration
Description
Title: Promotion of Gendered Innovation in Japan: Historical Context, Emerging Funding Trends, and OIST–JAIST Collaboration
Abstract:This seminar, led by Vice President Amane Koizumi (JAIST), provides an overview of current initiatives to promote Gendered Innovation in Japan and highlights its growing importance in shaping research excellence and societal impact. Gendered Innovation, a concept introduced by Professor Londa Schiebinger at Stanford University in 2005, emphasizes how integrating sex and gender analysis into research design can lead to new discoveries, improve scientific validity, and enhance innovation outcomes. Building on this international background, Japan has recently intensified efforts to incorporate sex and gender perspectives into national research strategies. Funding agencies such as AMED, JST, and JSPS have begun to introduce policies and programs that encourage researchers to integrate sex and gender analysis in project proposals and outcomes, particularly in biomedical, AI, and interdisciplinary fields. Within this context, the JAIST–OIST collaborative symposium has emerged as a strategic platform to advance these discussions across disciplines, from fundamental research to future societal implementation. The seminar will explore historical developments, recent policy trends, and practical implications for researchers, aiming to foster a deeper understanding of how Gendered Innovation can enhance research quality and maximize social value.
