OIST NetCafé Online Information Session in October 2025 (EN)
Description
This session is in English. The session will start with OIST general introduction, PhD and Research Internship admission process, financial support and student life. This time, we have invited two current OIST PhD students, who will give you insights into the study and research environment at OIST from different stages of their PhD studies.
Speakers
Sarah Ikeda (PhD student at the Cell Division Dynamics Unit)
I was born in Okinawa and raised in the United States. I received my bachelor's degree in cell and molecular biology from the University of Utah, where I uncovered the beauty and excitement of biological research. Seeking to develop as a researcher, I eagerly returned to Okinawa in 2024 to begin my doctoral studies at OIST. I am now a second year Ph.D. student in the Cell Division Dynamics Unit and am enjoying studying embryonic mitosis in Medaka Fish. Outside of research, I enjoy spending time with my church family, exploring farmer’s markets, singing, and eating delicious sweet potatoes!
Mauricio Andres Rios Maciel (PhD student at the Micro/ Bio/ Nanofluidics Unit)
Hi everyone! I’m Mauricio, from Mexico City. I completed both my bachelor’s and master’s back home. It was during my master’s that I got interested in microfluidics which led me to join OIST for an internship in 2022. Following this experience, I joined OIST for a full time PhD in the Micro/Bio/Nanofluidics Unit where I now focus on the biophysical properties and flow of coral mucus and its responses to environmental challenges. Outside of the lab, I enjoy working out at the gym, watching anime, and attending concerts.
