Data Management Lead
The Scientific Computing and Data Analysis (SCDA) section, under the Core Facilities, promotes the effective use of centrally managed computing and data storage resources in OIST research environment. The SCDA manages OIST scientific computing resources and services, including data storage and campus network to support computationally intensive research studies, ranging from bioinformatics to computational physics.
Under the direction of the SCDA Leader, the data management lead gathers domain specific knowledge on data life cycle, formulates data management policies, monitors the development and use of data, and conducts training programs for the research data management (RDM) of OIST research activities.
This position is funded by the J-PEAKS Grant, which was approved by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).
The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University was established in 2011 to contribute to the development of science and technology worldwide and to serve as a hub of innovation in Okinawa. - Gather specific knowledge on the life cycle of data directly or indirectly created and used in OIST research and related administrative activities.
- Formulate data management policies and propose effective data management workflows and procedures to ensure adequacy, accuracy and legitimacy of data.
- Establish rules and procedures for data sharing with collaborators, external stakeholders and public open access.
- Oversee and monitor the development and use of data systems across all aspects of research data management. Conduct monitoring and performance analysis to ensure safe and efficient data management and secure procedures.
- Establish training programs that support researchers' adoption of research data management best practices as part of normative research practice. Then, conduct research data management seminars and workshops.
- Provide upon request data and information for annual scientific reports for committees conducting investigations and other required OIST publication summary information.
- Any other duties appropriate to the grading of the position.
(Required)
- Minimum 3 – 4 years' experience in data management projects in academic environment or similar positions
- Able to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate data-driven insights to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Strong experience using data visualization software, database tools, and relevant programming languages
- Knowledge of professional office software and good verbal and written communications skills in English
- An analytical mindset with problem-solving skills
- Ability to develop positive working relationships and a strong rapport with team members
- Ability to learn and apply new concepts, methods and practices
(Preferred)
- Master's or PhD degree in a relevant field such as Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related field
- Experience in dealing with research data, as a researcher or a technician
- Background knowledge and experience in statistics and statistical software packages
- Experience working with local and cloud data storage
- Good command of Japanese

Full-time, fixed term appointment for 2 years. Contract initially with 6-month probationary period (inclusive). This contract may be renewed by taking into consideration the performance evaluation, conduct, and behavior of the Employee and OIST’s financial and other circumstances.
