The species, Stiphodon alcedo, is described in the latest issue of the journal Cybium. 16 May 2012 Research Update Taking Out the Garbage: How Cells Know What to Keep and What to Toss To respond to the body’s needs, our cells are constantly switching specific genes on or off. Flipping the switch means the cells either start or stop making copies of a gene out of molecules known as RNA; these so-called “transcripts” are then read by protein-making machinery to manufacture the gene’s final product. 08 October 2012 Institutional News OIST to Host Public ADHD Talk on June 16 Prof. David Daley, an expert on environmental factors in attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), will give a public lecture at the OIST Auditorium on Saturday, June 16, at 10:00 am. 23 May 2012 Research Update New Unit Profile: The Social Life of Electrons Have you ever wondered if our universe is just a tiny speck in a much larger cosmos? The Theory of Quantum Matter Unit here at OIST examines this idea on a much smaller scale. 22 October 2012 Institutional News A Breathtaking Skywalk Walking across the new skywalk between the Center Building and Laboratory 2 will be a unique experience. 01 February 2012 Institutional News Words of Wisdom from a Nature Editor Dr. Magdalena Skipper, a Senior Editor at Nature, gave two talks at OIST recently, both a part of OIST's regular colloquium series. 07 December 2012 Research Update Interrogating Elusive Membrane Proteins The Trans-Membrane Trafficking Unit is taking a sort of good cop-bad cop approach to one membrane protein complex, using two different means to grill it for information. 05 June 2012 Research Update Fly spit yields find about genetic controls and differences between sexes In a paper published yesterday in Science, a team of researchers that includes OIST's Nick Luscombe shows that the long-accepted view of how male fruit flies manipulate their genes’ activity should be revised. Their finding shows how cells use a single, crucial regulator to change the activity of large numbers of genes at the same time. 19 July 2012 Institutional News A Big Week OIST had an action-packed few days last week as it hosted meetings of its Board of Governors and Board of Councilors, followed by a press conference; held two performances to commemorate the opening of the new auditorium; and welcomed the First Ladies of Pacific island nations for a visit. 29 May 2012 Research Update Imaging the Future 28 March 2012 Pagination First page 1 2 Media Coverage Coverage of OIST in the media and on the web Media Coverage
