Recommendations and a summary are now available for the second international workshop “Toward the Development of an R&D Cluster in Okinawa,” which was held at OIST on March 29-30 this year. The workshop focused on action and implementation. The main recommendation is that an autonomous organization be created to lead and coordinate efforts to develop an Okinawa R&D cluster. Top priorities for such an organization would include strengthening science and technology education at the primary level, promoting global entrepreneurship, and cultivating relationships between academia, the private sector, and government to foster R&D-based economic development and connection between Okinawa and the world.

On April 23, OIST President Jonathan Dorfan and members of the steering group Takashi Hiyane of Lexues Inc. and Daiya Miyazato of the University of the Ryukyus presented the summary reports to Okinawa Prefectural Vice Governor Yoshiyuki Uehara, who expressed his support of the project and appreciation of the progress made.
