Directions

  • From southern and central parts of the main island and from Onna Village hotels
 

By car from the southern and central parts of the main island

By the Okinawa Expressway toll road (about a 60 minute drive from Naha Airport)

  1. Exit the toll road at the Yaka Exit.
  2. Turn left at the 'T' in the road after passing the toll booth.
  3. Go through the tunnel.
  4. Turn left at the "Onna Higashi" intersection.
  5. At the 'T' intersection "Onna Minami", turn left onto Highway 58, toward Naha.
    1. Seaside House is a white building and will be 600m ahead, on the right-hand side.
    2. To get to the main campus, turn left at the first traffic light. There is a small, white, Japanese sign above the road at the intersection which contains the letters "OIST". 
    3. Going up the hill, you will see the letters "OIST" on the hill. Take a left to follow the road up the hill to the campus.

By non-toll roads

  1. Travel north on Highway 58
  2. At the intersection "Nakadomari", there are two roads intersecting Highway 58. Take the "South Onna Bypass" by turning onto the road branching at a 45-degree angle northward from Highway 58. There is a large billboard describing the bypass.
    1. The bypass ends at a 'T' intersection, and on the right, you can see the letters "OIST" on the wall at the base of a hill. Turn right to go up the hill to the main campus.
    2. To get to Seaside House, turn left at this 'T' intersection, go down the hill to the traffic light, turn right onto Highway 58, and Seaside House will be a large white building on your left about 800m down this road.

By bus from the southern and central parts of the main island

Limousine Bus (about 90 minutes from Naha Airport)

  • Please use limousine bus for “Area C”

Local Bus (about 2.5 hours from Naha Airport)

The journey to OIST costs about 1400JPY. Bus #120, bound for “Nago Bus Terminal”, departs from bus stop No. 3 at Naha Airport (Domestic Terminal). The ticket fare is paid directly to the bus driver when leaving the bus. Please note that you cannot pay with 10,000JPY/5,000JPY bills. 

  • Bus #120 "Nago Nishi Kuukou Sen"
    • To get to the OIST campus, get off at the bus stop "Daigakuin Mae" and walk 15 minutes up the hill to the campus
    • To get to Seaside House, get off at the bus stop "Seaside House Mae".
  • Timetable:
  • Bus drivers do not speak English.  Take a paper ticket (jousha-ken) when you get on the bus.  Pre-recorded announcement for next bus stop will be made in Japanese.  Push a near-by button to tell the driver to get off the bus.  Check the display near the driver with your jousha-ken number for the actual fare. (You can find a good explanation on how to ride a local Japanese bus here (external link).

※ We do not recommend using  local buses, when traveling from OIST to Naha Airport, due to heavy traffic on Route 58.

By car from the northern parts of the main island

By the Okinawa Expressway toll road

  1. Exit from the Okinawa Expressway at Ishikawa
  2. After the toll booth, take a right onto Highway 73 toward "Hedomisaki/ Nago"
  3. At the "Nakadomari" intersection with Highway 58, take a hard right onto the "South Onna/ Onna Minami Bypass"
    1. The bypass ends at a 'T' intersection, and on the right, you can see the letters "OIST" on the wall at the base of a hill.
    2. Turn right to go up the hill to the main campus.
    3. To get to Seaside House, turn left at this 'T' intersection, go down the hill to the traffic light, turn right onto Highway 58, and Seaside House will be a large white building on your left about 800m down this road.

By bus from the northern parts of the main island

By taxi

From Naha Airport, taxi fare can cost from 8,000 to 12,000 JPY. From northern areas like Nago and Motobu, it depends on the distance.

In order to make sure you get to OIST readily and efficiently, print out the Japanese Campus Area Map and hand it to the taxi driver.
