Imaging neurons in a living mouse

Neurons in the brain are labelled with fluorescent sensors that vary in fluorescence intensity based on changes in voltage or calcium level within the neurons. Here, the neurons are imaged using a two-photon microscope and then reconstructed in 3-D. Two-photon microscopy also allows scientists to detect changes in fluorescence, and therefore measure the activity of these neurons in real-time.
