What is OIST’s SDG Initiative?

OIST's SDG Initiative is a university-wide commitment to sustainability with an aim to engage with and achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We raise awareness, partner with OIST researchers, staff and students, and cultivate collaboration with external stakeholders, all to promote a sustainable future.

In 2021, OIST launched a university-wide sustainability initiative, inspired by the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and in recognition of our hometown, Onna village, selected as one of Japan's "SDGs Future Cities".

Our work encompasses a wide range of activities that includes everything from raising awareness, encouraging collaborations, and acknowledging sustainable practices. In particular, we focus on raising awareness of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), recognizing university practices that align with the SDGs and promoting latest research and knowledge in this area. We provide scientific advice on sustainability and promote SDGs through education and outreach programs. We actively foster collaborations with local, national, and international partners and communicate our progress to the community.

We collaborate with OIST members and external stakeholders, who are interested in advancing sustainability through their current projects or by initiating new ones.

In order to effectively pursue our objectives, we have formed three dedicated member groups: the SDG Working Group, the SDG Advisory Group, and the Green Office Action Group. These groups meet on a regular basis, and their diverse expertise and perspectives are invaluable in promoting sustainability at OIST.
