脊索動物（ヒトを含む）の背側神経系を作りだす遺伝子はイトマキヒトデ（水腔動物の中の棘皮動物）の繊毛帯を作り出すように働いている。つまり、この二つの領域は相同であることが分かる。

22個のクラスターのそれぞれが、（A,B）原腸胚と（C,D,E）幼生のどの部分を構成する細胞を含むのかを、発生関連遺伝子の発現パターンから決めることができる。例えば８のクラスターは頂板を、９のクラスターは体腔中胚葉を特徴づける。
