Figure 4: Cell number measurements were performed for 10 hours with cells incubated in (A) ample glucose (2%) and cells which were shifted to media with low glucose (B) 0.2% and (C) 0.08%. Separate batch of cells was subject to respiratory complex III inhibitor 4 µM antimycin A (AA) treatment (black square). AA had strongest effect in cells shifted to glucose-limited (0.08%) conditions. Effect might be due to dependency on respiration during glucose limitations. (D) Oxygen consumption was measured with Clark-electrodes. Raw data are shown. AA treatment negatively affects oxygen consumption (E) Specific growth rates were calculated for the cell number measurements at varying concentrations of glucose. Treatment with AA reveals respiratory threshold which occurs below 0.2% glucose mark.
