The position

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST; see www.oist.jp) is a dynamic new graduate university of science and technology in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. The university is located on 85 hectares of protected forestland overlooking a beautiful shoreline and coral reefs. The campus is striking architecturally, and the facilities are outstanding (OIST campus video tour). There are no academic departments, which facilitate multidisciplinary research. Outstanding resources and equipment are provided and managed to encourage easy access and collaboration. English is the official language of the University, and the university research community is fully international, with more than 50 countries represented. OIST is rapidly gaining recognition in the worldwide academic community as a model for excellence in education and research.

Position Summary:


You will join the newly established Quantum Engineering and Design research unit led by Bill Munro at OIST, part of a vibrant quantum information ecosystem (list of research units) to undertake groundbreaking research in this rapidly developing discipline. We have several open postdoctoral research positions in theoretical/computational quantum science and technology and are looking for talented individuals to join us. Research topics of particular interest include:

  • The design and modelling of quantum devices and systems.
  • The design of quantum network technologies for a future quantum internet.
  • Quantum edge and fog computing.
  • Distributed quantum computation.
  • The exploration of hybrid quantum systems and their applications.

Responsibilities

The postdoctoral scholars will work together and in cooperation with Bill to engage in creative, curiosity-driven research in quantum science and technology-related areas at OIST.  They are expected to pursue to engage in creative, curiosity-driven research, and are encouraged to develop their own independent interests, as well as collaborate with existing group members and the quantum ecosystem at OIST, as well as external collaborators.  In addition, all unit members are expected to support the training and mentorship of students and other unit staff. Staff scientists are expected to pursue their own research agenda with a high level of independence.

Qualifications

(Required)

We are seeking candidates with excellent post-graduate academic background in theoretical or computational quantum information science and technology or a closely related field, with research experience in a topic of relevance to the role. Candidates must have a PhD at the time of commencing the position. Ideal candidates will be curious, creative, highly motivated and able to work independently. They will also have good communication and interpersonal skills. The Quantum Engineering and Design Unit fosters a respectful, constructive and inclusive working culture and environment.
