Materials Analysis Specialist

The position

The OIST Core Facilities play a vital role in facilitating research and education by offering state-of-the-art research facilities and support services to OIST researchers and students. The Engineering Section, one of our eight technical sections, specializes in mechanical engineering, electronics, nanofabrication, and materials characterization. Currently, we are actively looking for a highly motivated Materials Analysis Specialist to enhance our surface science capabilities at the university.

The primary responsibilities of the candidate will include the maintenance of X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy machines and providing training and support to OIST researchers in their operation. Additionally, the candidate will also be responsible for similar tasks related to SEM (scanning electron microscopy) and FIB (Focused Ion Beam) equipment

Responsibilities
  1. Provides the following services related to XPS
    • Training of researchers on XPS machines
    •  Consultations with researchers on sample preparation and machine use.
    •  Measurement and analysis of data as requested.
  2. Provides the following services related to SEM
    • Training of researchers on SEM
    • Consultations with researchers on sample preparation, measurement, and analysis of data
    • Observation of samples as requested by researchers
  3. Provides the following services related to FIB/SEM
    • Training of researchers on FIB/SEM
    • Consultations with researchers on sample preparation, milling and imaging.
  4. Establishes standard training programs, manuals and protocols for the efficient training and use of the instruments
  5. Maintains all relevant equipment and facilities
  6. Works with equipment vendors on maintenance, development, and trouble-shooting issues
  7. Maintains stocks of consumables
  8. Supports the purchase and procurement of equipment based on the needs of researchers, by documenting the specifications of the equipment and by communicating with the manufacturers and vendors, etc.
  9. Maintains excellent records regarding research support, equipment maintenance and safety
  10. Maintains and expands collaborative relationships with other domestic and international institutes
  11. Other duties as assigned by the Engineering Section Leader
Qualifications

(Required)

  1. A minimum of 5 years of experience in operating and maintaining XPS machines
  2. A minimum of 5 years of experience in operating and maintaining FIB/SEMs
  3. A minimum of 5 years of experience in surface science characterization
  4. Experience in training and mentoring others
  5. Demonstrated capacity for acquiring new skills and staying at the forefront of technology
  6. Excellent communication skills in English.
  7. Ability to work as part of a team
  8. Proficiency in problem solving
  9. Aptitude for assimilating into the local culture and adapting to a dynamic work environment

(Preferred)

  1. A Master’s degree is preferred
  2. Ability to communicate in Japanese is desirable
